Reporting the financial world

Posted in Uncategorized on May 20th, 2012 by andreamyers8

With the world’s stock markets in turmoil and concerns about the global economy escalating, this week on Over to You we have been looking at the challenges that face those who report on the financial world.

How do reporters cover these developments without influencing the state of the markets and exacerbating the situation?

Martin Webber, editor of World Business Report, joined me in the studio to discuss the dilemmas that face reporters at a time of economic turbulence.

Martin explained that language is very important when describing the state of the markets and provided an insight into the guidance he has given about covering the story.

He explained that for a fall of two percent, moderate words like ‘falling back’ should be used, whereas describing markets as ‘plunging’ should only be used for falls of five or six percent – and ‘crash’ only for falls of 18-20 percent, which happen only once in a generation.

Social media in Egypt

Elsewhere in the world, Egypt’s former president Mubarak appears on trial in Cairo, bringing the country’s revolution back into the headlines.

Earlier in the year social media was credited with bringing down his regime, and we wanted to know if it is still playing such an important role today, so I discussed the subject with blogger and activist Wael Abbas and Sam Farrah, presenter of Talking Point on BBC Arabic.

We explored whether the balance has changed in the relationship between new social media, like Twitter, and the more conventional traditional media.

Wael explained that social media has been having a harder time recently as people have been listening more to the state media.

Sam thought that mainstream media has a role in cooperationg with social media, and while it may be facing a tough time, it is a temporary phase.

If you have anything you want to comment about that you hear on the World Service, we are always pleased to hear from you, so do contact us.

Witness: Trayvon Martin Attacked George Zimmerman ‘MMA Style’

Posted in Uncategorized on May 20th, 2012 by andreamyers8

Trayvon Martin’s real actions prior to being shot are finally being revealed. According to Sanford Police Department reports released today, a witness interviewed 90 minutes after the shooting testified that he saw Martin straddling George Zimmerman on the ground and violently battering him “MMA” style before Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest.

The witness said he was inside his home, about 30 feet away from the incident, when he heard a “commotion coming from the walkway” behind his residence. He said he had seen a “a black male, wearing a dark colored ‘hoodie’ on top of a white or Hispanic male who was yelling for help.” The black male “was mounted on the white or Hispanic male and throwing punches ‘MMA (mixed martial arts) style.’” The witness said he called out that he was dialing 911, then heard a pop and saw the black male “laid out on the grass.”

The witness’s account jibes with the physical evidence gleaned from Zimmerman’s appearance when the police arrived; Officer Timothy Smith reported that Zimmerman was “bleeding from the nose and back of his head,” and Officer Jonathan Mead noted that he “appeared to have a broken and bloody nose and swelling of his face.” In addition, medical reports from Altamonte Medical Practice stated that Zimmerman had an “open wound of scalp” and “Nasal bones, closed fracture.”

Zimmerman’s story is holding water. The mainstream media’s story – aided and abetted by the Obama administration – is falling apart. This is quickly turning into Duke Lacrosse II.

Rush Limbaugh: Biden Went Nuts In Ohio

RUSH: It's working! It's working! We're coming back! We're coming back! Jobs are starting to come back. This is off the rails. Oh, by the way, news flash just breaking on the Bloomberg wire. Hewlett-Packard considering cutting as many as 25,000 jobs, 8% of its workforce. The day after Joe Biden says things are really starting to come back, signs of life and hope in the heartland, jobs are starting to come back, the ones that are coming back, the kind of jobs you can build a middle class family on. Hewlett-Packard laying off 8% of its workforce. Again, there are very few times I wish this was a television show. This is one of them. I wish you could see Biden's eyes. It's hard to describe with inoffensive language. He just doesn't seem all there, folks, and the theories abound that he's trying to save his spot on the ticket here, that he's really worried.

Romney: Obama Campaign Based On “Character Assassination”

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19th, 2012 by andreamyers8

Mitt Romney holds a press conference to respond to a report that a Republican group planned to run ads against Obama linking him to Jeremiah Wright.

"I read the article on the aircraft. As I read the article, I want to make it very clear, I repudiate that effort. I think it is the wrong course for a PAC or a campaign. I hope that our campaigns can respectively be about the future and about issues and about a vision for America. I've been disappointed in the president's campaign to date which has focused on character assassination," Romney said at a press conference.

"I just think we're wiser to talk about the issues of the day," Romney added.

CNN reports: Billionaire Joe Ricketts on Thursday rejected an ad proposal by high-profile Republicans billed as a provocative campaign against President Barack Obama that would run around the Democratic National Convention.

Earlier Thursday The New York Times reported Republican strategists were working with billionaire Ricketts to run commercials "linking Mr. Obama to incendiary comments by his former spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr."

Anti-NATO Protest Rampages Through Chicago Neighborhood, Taunts Police

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19th, 2012 by andreamyers8

Anti-NATO demonstrations are now entering full force in Chicago, after Monday morning saw arrests of demonstrators at President Obama’s campaign headquarters. Tuesday night marked the beginning of the ugly scene Chicagoans have been preparing for, mentally, for months, as a masked mob of angry, violent protesters took over Halsted Street on the south side of Chicago.

Wait, did I say violent? I’m sorry… I forgot: they are supposed to be called “non-violent, mostly peaceful” demonstrators. At least that’s how the Chicago media still refers to them. Even when the demonstrations turn violent, injuries and arrests, the old guard media still sees it fit to point out that none of those occurrences were actually intended by the protesters.

The protesters began their self proclaimed FTP (F*ck the Police) march Tuesday evening by startling unsuspecting residents. The demonstrators were a roving mob, covered in black, head to toe. Most, of course, donned face-concealing bandanas and carried red and/or black flags (communist and/or anarchist, respectively).

I interviewed several neighbors in the area who had no idea what was going on.; some thought there were fights in the street. One area resident said, “It was scary.”

Other residents found common ground with those protesters who were marching against police brutality. However, when informed that the protest consisted of a large group of communists and anarchists, only a few neighbors remained comfortable with the group marching through their neighborhood.

One woman I interviewed said her son had joined the march “against police brutality,” unaware of who the group was, and “wanted to go get him” after she found out.

After marching 20 blocks, the protest arrived at the Chicago Police Department 9th Precinct headquarters to “peaceably assemble for a redress of grievances.” Although this time I’m being sarcastically polite with my description, as they were really taunting and ridiculing the police with vulgarity and profanity.

It was here that the community residents of the Bridgeport neighborhood reached their boiling point with the mob, after an altercation occurred between one of the anarchists and an 80-year-old man. Both claimed the other hit the other first–and in the blink of an eye, Bridgeport residents were demanding the protesters leave their neighborhood with hard fists drawn.

Once the sun was gone completely and light rain started to fall, the march continued through an unscheduled pathway of streets and alleys. It was then that the march turned into a game of cat-and-mouse between demonstrators and the police.

The police, in this instance, were mainly trying to keep protestors on the sidewalks and to allow traffic to move again. The mob, meanwhile, stormed the Halsted Street Orange Line Station in an attempt to hop on a train towards downtown Chicago and lose the police escort. But after nearly every single protester–including an observer from the National Lawyers Guild–jumped the turnstiles or passed through a propped open handicapped gate, the Chicago Transit Authority stopped the trains.

The demonstrators continued through the streets of the near south side after failing to board the train, and began to employ their “non-violent direct action tactics” on the police officers. They created a barricade of road construction horses, forcing the police to leave their cars to clear a way for traffic. Later, demonstrators dragged dumpsters into streets and knocked over dozens of garbage cans in alleys.

This, of course, is all no surprise. We have all been told for months and months, that “this is what democracy looks like”; this is the peaceful protesting we were promised during the NATO summit in Chicago.

We were also told for months and months–by Occupiers, unions, anarchists, communists and other left-wing radicals for “change”– that “this is only the beginning.”

And, indeed, it looks like Tuesday night was in fact the beginning of what’s in store over the coming NATO Summit weekend, as dozens of busses have been delivering hundreds, and perhaps even thousands, of protesters to Chicago, “the belly of the beast.”

Who’s to blame for Egypt’s football tragedy?

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19th, 2012 by andreamyers8

It’s now nearly 48 hours after the football match in Port Said that ended in perhaps one of the most significant tragedies of recent times.

74 fans were killed following al-Masry’s unexpected win over al-Ahly, Egypt’s most famous and successful club.

What happened is now pretty clear. After the final whistle, al-Masry’s fans invaded the pitch, seeking to attack al-Ahly’s players; after that, they charged into the al-Ahly fans. Dozens of people were crushed to death, suffocated or fatally stabbed.

But why this happened – and who is to blame – is now the major talking point. As the BBC’s Yolande Knell explains:

Did fans instigate the clashes themselves, was there a conspiracy to provoke, was there deliberate negligence by police? Or was the whole thing just a case of badly trained police mishandling football crowd violence.

These are now politically charged questions.

World Have Your Say will be on BBC World television at 1500 GMT discussing this question.

MILAN (Reuters) – The average lifespan of Italian debt, which has fallen during the euro zone crisis as investors favor safer short-term issues, should still be close to the current level of 6.8 years at the end of 2012, a top Italian debt official said. As the average maturity of a country’s debts falls, the amount of bonds it has to sell each year rises. This makes it more exposed to a worsening in market sentiment that could push borrowing costs higher, even to unaffordable levels. …

Krauthammer: Super PAC Ad Is Legitimate, Romney Wise Not To Run It

Posted in Uncategorized on May 18th, 2012 by andreamyers8

"I think it would be completely legitimate but I think Romney is wise not to do it," syndicated columnist and FOX News contributor Charles Krauthammer said tonight. "Look, I think there is an appalling double standard here. Its ok for The Washington Post to run a 5,000-word front page story on a prank that Romney, at the age of 15, committed. And yet it's somehow illegitimate, the low road or whatever for people to bring up the fact that the adult Obama had a 20-year relationship with a racist, anti-American preacher whom he considered, spoke about, wrote about as his mentor and spiritual advisor. That is a double standard unlike any I've ever seen. Now John McCain accepted it in his campaign."

"I think it's mistake and I think it's legitimate in a case of a man unknown as Obama to ask, where there was no history, there was no legislative achievements or signature, intellectual achievements. He wrote two books that were both about himself incidentally, which might have been a clue. But other than that, we didn't know him and [it is] illegitimate to ask about his associates? How else would you know him? Him and William Ayers. But McCain accepted it. I thought it was a tactical error and I understand the noble intent that was behind it," Krauthammer said on the "Special Report" panel segment tonight.

"But today, I would say tactically it's a mistake because we know who Obama is. He isn't the unknown of '08. He's got a record and you don't have to bring it up. But in principle, if you wanted to, it would be completely legitimate and I think the double standard ought to be denounced rather than accepted as everybody including Romney does," he said.

News coverage on BBC World Service

On this week’s Over to You we look behind the stories that have been making the news.

We try to get to grips with exactly how the news is made, the decisions and challenges that are overcome in order to deliver it on the World Service.

Steve Evans, BBC World Service’s Berlin correspondent joins me from Oslo, where he has been covering the unfolding tragedy there. Steve talks me through what makes this a uniquely Norwegian crisis, and how this affected coverage of it.

Phone hacking scandal

It’s been the biggest media story of the year and is showing no sign of abating, but has the News of the World phone hacking scandal received too much coverage on the World Service? A listener puts this question to Andrew Whitehead, editor of news and current affairs on the World Service.

Better relations

In the mailbag we have a response to last week’s special edition with World Service commissioning editors Jeremy Skeet and Steve Titherington. Listener Piet Boon shares his thoughts and ideas about how to improve listener relations.

That’s it in a jam packed programme this week, as always please post you thoughts on the blog.

News coverage on BBC World Service

Posted in Uncategorized on May 17th, 2012 by andreamyers8

How BBC World Service has covered the 9/11 anniversary

Posted in Uncategorized on May 16th, 2012 by andreamyers8

This week we look into how BBC World Service has approached the tragic and very sensitive issue of the10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. I find out how to get not only the content right but the tone as well.

I speak to two key people behind the BBC’s coverage of the anniversary, Steve Titherington, BBC World Service Commissioning Editor, and Philippa Goodrich, Editor of Business Daily on the World Service.

Steve outlines the special approach that the World Service has taken to the anniversary, discussing how he intended to commission a range of programmes that really took the time to connect with Americans.

Philippa, in turn discusses how the 9/11 attacks can be seen as the starting point of a decade of decline for America, and talks about the difficulties in balancing the economic issues with the greater tragedy within it.

In the mailbag this week we hear from Dennis Anthony who writes in with concerns about the use of diction within the World Service, with the word ‘epicentre’ a particular bone of contention.

Another listener writes in to express his dissatisfaction with the overuse of ident music on the World Service.

Finally, Joy Clarke emails from South Africa to express her delight with the latest series of Reith Lectures, a series that is close to our own hearts on Over To You.

So, as you can see it’s a jam packed show this week, but please if you have anything to say for next week’s show, let us know. We always want to know your thoughts on the World Service.
